{"id":174,"date":"2017-08-07T13:09:02","date_gmt":"2017-08-07T17:09:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/?p=174"},"modified":"2025-11-12T10:30:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T15:30:09","slug":"automated-fiber-placement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/automated-fiber-placement\/","title":{"rendered":"Automated Fiber Placement"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;re delighted to highlight the successful automation of fiber placement on a custom-made leg brace by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saxion.edu\/\">Saxion University<\/a> in the Netherlands. Saxion uses RoboDK for Simulation and Offline Programing a UR5 robot arm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process begins by 3D scanning the patient&#8217;s knee. The 3D scan is then converted to a CAD file and edited using SolidWorks. The mould and fiber placement toolpaths are defined in SolidWorks software. The mould is first printed using a 3D printer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Glass reinforced polypropylene is printed on the mould using a UR5 robot. The 3D files generated from SolidWorks are converted to robot programs using RoboDK&#8217;s simulation and Offline Programming features, which allows Automated Fiber Placement using a robot from a 3D file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/LayingFiberUR5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" src=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/LayingFiberUR5-300x195.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/LayingFiberUR5-300x195.png 300w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/LayingFiberUR5-768x500.png 768w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/LayingFiberUR5.png 964w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Setting up and using RoboDK was an easy process.
