{"id":2725,"date":"2020-02-25T08:46:22","date_gmt":"2020-02-25T13:46:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/?p=2725"},"modified":"2025-03-02T12:10:21","modified_gmt":"2025-03-02T17:10:21","slug":"lights-out-robot-painting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/lights-out-robot-painting\/","title":{"rendered":"Lights Out Robot Painting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>&#8220;Robots are revolutionizing the visual arts by providing artists with new creative techniques&#8221;, says Albert Nubiola, CEO of robot simulation and programming software firm RoboDK, as an exhibition of robot-made paintings opens in the prestigious Ben Brown Fine Arts gallery, London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conceived by digital arts pioneers Rob and\nNick Carter, the ingenious &#8216;Dark Factory Portraits&#8217; exhibition features an\nindustrial robot arm from KUKA &#8211;dubbed &#8216;Heidi,&#8217; by the artists&#8211;that produces\nfine art portraits of famous artists in acrylics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The &#8216;Dark Factories&#8217; title is a nod to\n&#8216;lights out&#8217; manufacturing processes, where robots work autonomously in unlit\nfactory spaces. Heidi also works &#8216;blind&#8217; \u2013that is, without any cameras or\nvision sensors.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"960\" data-id=\"2731\" src=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Rob-and-Nick-Carter_Robot-painting-3.jpg\" alt=\"Rob and Nick Carter using RoboDK\" class=\"wp-image-2731\" srcset=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Rob-and-Nick-Carter_Robot-painting-3.jpg 960w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Rob-and-Nick-Carter_Robot-painting-3-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Rob-and-Nick-Carter_Robot-painting-3-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Rob-and-Nick-Carter_Robot-painting-3-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>How it works<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heidi receives a photograph in digital\nform, applies some image processing and Google Face API and courtesy of some\ncoding in Autodesk Maya, generates a final image. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The robot must be able to work out where\nthe brushstrokes should go, how long they should be, the angle of the brush and\nother details. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At this point in the process, the robot has\na clear idea of its objective, but it doesn&#8217;t understand the mechanics of\npainting in a human-like way.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where RoboDK comes in.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I was able to glue together Autodesk Maya and RoboDK using their SDKs, to form a single elegant tool to design any kind of painting and have it painted by a robot&#8221;. Says software engineer, Julian Mann, who brought Heidi&#8217;s mechanics to life for &#8216;Dark Factory Portraits.&#8217;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"960\" src=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Rob-and-Nick-Carter_Robot-painting-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2732\" srcset=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Rob-and-Nick-Carter_Robot-painting-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Rob-and-Nick-Carter_Robot-painting-1-240x300.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Using the RoboDK API, Mann coded Heidi&#8217;s\nevery movement; from paint and brush selection through to which brushstroke to\nuse and how to clean a paintbrush. As the project progressed, Mann observed\nthat the robot developed some of the fine motor skills that humans take for\ngranted when painting.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs development progressed, the system\ngathered more and more of the skills we take for granted when painting with our\nown hands,\u201d says Mann. \u201cFor example, the robot gently ramps into each stroke\nand pushes harder and softer in order to modulate the stroke width. It holds\ndifferent brushes at different angles, and it takes great care to wipe just the\nright amount of excess off the brush.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/vimeo.com\/377543857\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>RoboDK enables users to easily program more than <strong>900 industrial robots<\/strong>, from small collaborative robots to large industrial arms &#8211;each of which offers a multitude of different ways to apply paint to canvas and sculpt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While advanced users can use the RoboDK\nAPI, non-coders can easily create complex robot programs in RoboDK by pointing\nand clicking with their mouse in a simulated computer environment. Users can\ntest out their robot&#8217;s movements before applying them in the real world.\nMeanwhile, RoboDK software takes care of translating those clicks into code\nthat the robot understands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Robotics opens up fresh possibilities for\nartists and creatives by providing new tools and processes to work with, says RoboDK\nmarketing manager Lauren Ierullo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs the brilliant Dark Factories exhibition\nshows, it&#8217;s not about replacing artists, but empowering artists and enabling\nthem to explore new avenues of creativity through automation,\u201d says\nIerullo.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Carters share this sentiment, seeing\nrobotics as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gq-magazine.co.uk\/culture\/article\/dark-factory-portraits-exhibition\">a\ntool, an extension of their craft<\/a>, rather than as a threat to human\ncreativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The successful collaboration between the Carters, Mann and Heidi, highlights the benefits and creative potential of human-robot collaboration, says Nubiola. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are many areas in which the best\nresults come from humans and robots working together and the visual arts is no\nexception,\u201d he says. \u201cOur software allows artists to add robotic tools to their\nrepertoire and is creating to new types of artists &#8211;creative engineers that\nbuild the algorithms that robots use to produce art.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls src=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Andy-Warhol-Robot-Portrait.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>RoboDK was founded in 2015 as a spin-off company from the CoRo laboratory at ETS\nUniversity in Montreal, Canada. In that time its robot simulation and\nprogramming software has helped bring several high-profile artistic projects to\nlife. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neoset Designs, a New York-based art and digital fabrication studio, was asked to collaborate with music streaming service Spotify on the &#8216;RapCaviar Pantheon&#8217; robot sculpting project in 2017. <a href=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/robot-machining-sculptures\/\">Using RoboDK&#8217;s milling features<\/a> the team completed three large sculptures of outstanding rap artists in just 15 days. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"759\" src=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Spotify-RapCaviar_personalization-1024x759-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2735\" srcset=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Spotify-RapCaviar_personalization-1024x759-2.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Spotify-RapCaviar_personalization-1024x759-2-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Spotify-RapCaviar_personalization-1024x759-2-768x569.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Robot machining sculptures by Neoset Designs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Artist Robot Longo&#8217;s stunning &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/accurate-robot-drilling\/\">Death Star<\/a>&#8216; sculpture,\nnow part of the Collection of the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo, New\nYork, consists of 40,000 brass and copper bullets arranged around a steel\nsphere. To ensure accuracy, RoboDK software was used to control a custom-built,\nrobotic drilling system that prepared all 40,000 holes into which the bullets\nwere placed.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ascan Aldag is an artist that pushes the boundaries of 3D-printing\nby using an industrial robot arm to produce <a href=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/supersized-robot-3d-printing\/\">supersized\n3D-printed art works<\/a>. Aldag built a custom extruder to speed up the\nprinting process and RoboDK allowed him to control the entire system, including\nthe tricky task of synchronizing the extrusion speed with the robot&#8217;s\nmovements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And camera motion control specialists, CMOCOS used RoboDK and a collaborative robot arm from KUKA to create<a href=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/robot-instant-portraits\/\"> instant portrait<\/a> sketches based on digital photographs.
