However, many products are handmade just because the production numbers aren&#8217;t high enough to warrant using full automation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In this case study, we show how one group of researchers into industrial plastics used a robot and RoboDK to automate a small-batch manufacturing process. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>The problem with many forms of automation is that they require you to have a consistent process running at high throughput. Without this, it often doesn&#8217;t make sense to invest in automation as you can&#8217;t be confident that you will achieve a return on investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you&#8217;ve got a smaller batch project, you might wonder if it&#8217;s even possible to automate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the problem that one group of researchers in industrial plastics addressed with their latest robotics project. They were looking for a small, cost-effective way to automate the assembly of plastic hula-hoop toys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Introducing\u2026 ATS2i<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers of the French company &#8220;Applications Thermoplastiques et Solutions Industrielles Innovantes&#8221; (ATS2i) carried out this project. It was led by engineer Alexandre Temporel, who has been working in industrial plastics for over 15 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company specializes in the design and engineering of innovative industrial projects, with specific expertise in the plastics industry. They incorporate a diverse range of manufacturing technologies, including 3D printing, <a name=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/robot-machining-simplify-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/robot-machining-simplify-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">machining<\/a>, and CNC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/CNC-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3765\" srcset=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/CNC-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/CNC-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/CNC-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/CNC-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/CNC-2048x1152.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>ATS2i looks at projects across the whole life cycle of industrial projects, from research and development and feasibility studies all the way up to design and prototyping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of their scope as a company is to help others to modernize their existing industrial machines through advanced automation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where their hula-hoop robotics project comes in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Project: Hula-Hoop Production<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The project in question involved the production of plastic hula-hoop toys. This is a good example of a task that is usually carried out by hand in many situations when small batch sizes are required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team at ATS2i created their setup as a test to see if robotics could be used to easily automate the assembly stage of hula-hoop production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are Hula-Hoops?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re not familiar with hula-hoop toys, here is a primer\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hula-hoops have been used as toys <a name=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hula_hoop\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hula_hoop\" target=\"_blank\">for over 2,500 years<\/a>. To use the hoop, you spin it around your waist, limbs, or neck. Children use them for games and adults as a form of exercise or entertainment. Although hula-hoops have a long history, they significantly rose to popularity in the 1950s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most modern hula-hoops are made from plastic tubing, though they were traditionally made from willow, bamboo, or stiff grass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Hula-Hoop-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3766\" srcset=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Hula-Hoop-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Hula-Hoop-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Hula-Hoop-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Hula-Hoop-1536x863.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Hula-Hoop-2048x1151.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Complexity of Manufacturing a Hula-Hoop<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" name=\"http:\/\/www.madehow.com\/Volume-6\/Hula-Hoop.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.madehow.com\/Volume-6\/Hula-Hoop.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">As a piece of engineering, hula-hoops are very simple to make<\/a>. The plastic tube is bent into a circle and the ends are attached together, usually by inserting a double-ended dowel plug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While they are simple to produce, hula-hoops are not always manufactured at high volume. Unlike the mass-produced versions, smaller artisan makers produce them in small batches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The task of connecting the ends of the hoops together is a good candidate for automation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a good example of a task that is often required in other areas of plastic manufacturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Robotic Application: Hula-Hoop Assembly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The team&#8217;s project involved a simple use of a collaborative robot. As a result, the team performed the task in the workshop without the need for extra safety measures like fencing or safety sensors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The setup and manufacturing process were reasonably straightforward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/CaptureVideo.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4076\" width=\"461\" height=\"712\" srcset=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/CaptureVideo.jpg 461w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/CaptureVideo-194x300.jpg 194w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 461px) 100vw, 461px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Robotic Setup<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The setup consisted of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A Universal Robots UR5 collaborative robot.<\/li><li>An OnRobot gripper.<\/li><li><a target=\"_blank\" name=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/download\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RoboDK for robot programming<\/a>.<\/li><li>A roll bender jig for bending the plastic tubes.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The team integrated these components into a single robotic cell that took up only as much space as a tabletop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Manufacturing Process<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The process to create a hula-hoop involved aspects of machine tending (to tend the roll bender) and assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The steps were as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Pick up and bend the tube into the roll bender, assuring a 1.5 mm protrusion.<\/li><li>Align the ends.<\/li><li>Insert the heated glass, useful to melt the ends of the plastic tube.<\/li><li>Press the ends of the tube together, fixing them.<\/li><li>Wait for the plastic to cool before removing it from the machine.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Avant-1-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4078\" srcset=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Avant-1-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Avant-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Avant-1-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Avant-1-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Avant-1-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Programming the Robot with RoboDK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Alexandre Temporel and his team decided to use RoboDK to program the robot. The software is compatible out-of-the-box with UR robots and useful for tasks such as this one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They first created the setup within the software. With RoboDK&#8217;s capability to easily add 3D models, they were also able to add a model of the roll bender.
