January 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>The most intriguing robotics news brought to you by the team at RoboDK.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Industrial Robot Brief<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>CES 2022 ensured that January kicked off in spectacular fashion, with new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OzPGj26P0D4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">humanoids<\/a>, Samsung&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/roboticsandautomationnews.com\/2022\/01\/19\/samsung-caught-planning-robot-invasion-of-america\/48459\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">plans<\/a> to enter the US robot market, and Deere&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-5t-DHa88ss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">autonomous tractor<\/a> grabbing most of the headlines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were some interesting industrial technologies debuted at the show too, including the new Intel Alder Lake S-series and H-series processors for edge computing and IoT applications, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ubiquityrobotics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ubiquity Robotics<\/a>&#8216; low cost, ROS-based, mobile robot dubbed &#8216;Conveyor,&#8217; and Doosan&#8217;s upgraded Smart Farm solution. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ubiquity Robotics Conveyorbot - Let&#039;s Get Things Moving!\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/H_ZCVV_zcpU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Elsewhere, speaking about Tesla&#8217;s plans to develop a humanoid robot, CEO Elon Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2022\/01\/28\/tech\/tesla-robot-optimus\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mused<\/a> that the project &#8220;has the potential to be more significant than the vehicle business over time&#8221; and grocery delivery giant Ocado revealed that it\u2019s using <a href=\"https:\/\/3dprintingindustry.com\/news\/ocado-is-now-using-hp-3d-printing-technology-to-build-its-fulfillment-robots-203175\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3D printing technology<\/a> to build the pick-and-pack robots used in its fulfillment centers in an effort to improve packaging efficiency and reduce operating costs.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also in January, autonomous mobile robot maker MiR announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20220127005159\/en\/MiR-Autonomous-Mobile-Robot-Sales-Up-42-in-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">42% increase<\/a> in sales over 2021 and cobot pioneer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20220127005798\/en\/Universal-Robots-Reports-Record-Annual-Revenue-of-over-300M\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Universal Robots<\/a> reported record annual revenue of USD 311 million, a 41% increase on 2020 and 23% up on pre-pandemic results in 2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Stretch.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"796\" height=\"448\" src=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Stretch.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4982\" srcset=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Stretch.jpg 796w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Stretch-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Stretch-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 796px) 100vw, 796px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: DHL Supply Chain<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>DHL Supply Chain announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhl.com\/us-en\/home\/press\/press-archive\/2022\/dhl-supply-chain-to-invest-usd15-million-to-further-automate-warehousing-via-boston-dynamics-collaboration.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">USD15 million investment<\/a> in automation from Boston Dynamics (starting with deployments of the latter&#8217;s eye-catching &#8216;Stretch&#8217; robot on unloading processes in distribution centers), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20220118006086\/en\/FANUC-Introduces-New-M-1000iA-Robot-Designed-to-Handle-Heavy-Products\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fanuc unveiled the M-1000iA<\/a>, its most powerful serial-link industrial robot to date, with a payload of 1000 kg. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Rise of RaaS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Robotics-as-a-service (RaaS) business models allow companies to enjoy the benefits of automation by leasing robots and components rather than buying them outright. The emergence of RaaS in recent years has been one of the most exciting trends in industrial robotics &#8211;especially for smaller companies that have traditionally been unable to deploy automation due to the capital costs involved.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Formic.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"543\" src=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Formic.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4993\" srcset=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Formic.png 768w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Formic-300x212.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: FORMIC <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, by leveraging RaaS opportunities, companies can rent automation at an hourly rate that&#8217;s considerably less than hiring a human worker. Market analysts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abiresearch.com\/press\/robotics-service-key-unlocking-next-phase-market-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ABI Research<\/a> estimate that the installed base for RaaS will grow from 4,442 units in 2016 to 1.3 million by 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/rent-robot-worker-less-paying-human\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wired<\/a> covered this topic and the implications for factories and labor, in January, reporting that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/oid.wharton.upenn.edu\/profile\/wulynn\/#research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lynn Wu<\/a>, an associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania&#8217;s Wharton School and a coauthor on the 2019 study, says she expects robots paid by the hour to become more common. But she notes that in contrast to many information technologies, few businesses know how to use robots. \u201cIt\u2019s going to take longer than people think,\u201d she says.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New Human-Robot Collaboration Research <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With humans and robots intercting more than ever before, researchers are racing to understand and improve human-robot collaboration, particularly in industrial environments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chinese researchers have developed a closed-loop human-machine interface that integrates auditory, visual and haptic virtual reality (VR) into a robotic VR system. The system uses skin-tone elastomeric silicon as an adhesive interface to the user\u2019s skin. Copper wires connect the battery, sensors and other electronics and wireless transmission enables the wearer to send instructions to a remote machine. (H\/T <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azorobotics.com\/News.aspx?newsID=12692\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AZO Robotics<\/a>) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Capture.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"656\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Capture.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4979\" srcset=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Capture.png 656w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Capture-300x179.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 656px) 100vw, 656px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The system proposes using electronic skin as the basis of wireless human-machine interfaces for robotic VR. Credit: PLOS <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, researchers at China Three Gorges University claim to have developed a system that uses a combination electrical readings from muscles and brainwaves to read a human co-worker\u2019s mind with 96 per cent accuracy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The co-worker did not need to say or do anything when they needed a tool or a component, as the robot would recognise the intention almost instantly, picking up the object and putting it on the workstation, according to the developers.<\/p>\n<cite>&#8212;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/science\/article\/3162257\/chinese-scientists-build-factory-robot-can-read-minds-assembly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">South China Morning Post<\/a>, Jan 06, 2022<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Elsewhere, a  study published January in <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0261174\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PLOS ONE<\/a> found that humans mirror the movement of humanoid robots that they\u2019re interacting with. Additionally, the rhythmic coordination between human and robot looks similar to that between humans. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/technology\/human-robot-social-interaction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Popular Science<\/a> reports: &#8220;Most participants noticed that they were synchronizing with the robot, but they were unsure of whether it was themselves or the robot who was the one adjusting their tempo. Perhaps finding a way to measure intentionality through EEG or fMRI could be a next step in mapping this behavior pattern onto neurobiology, [lead researcher] Ghiles Mostafaoui proposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/robot.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"492\" src=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/robot.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4980\" srcset=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/robot.jpg 768w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/robot-300x192.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">UBCO doctoral student Debasmita Mukherjee is exploring ways to program robots so they can work safely alongside people. Credit: The University of British Columbia, Okanagan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And Safety &amp; Health Magazine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safetyandhealthmagazine.com\/articles\/22215-researchers-aim-to-improve-human-robot-collaboration-in-industrial-workplaces\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> on the work of researchers at the University of British Columbia, Canada, into human-robot collaboration. The team has developed a system that combines artificial intelligence and machine learning to help robots predict what other robots and humans will do, and respond appropriately. Upcoming is a paper from Debasmita Mukherjee, a doctoral student, that&#8217;s expected to include a novel taxonomy of levels of interaction between humans and robots and a comprehensive review of the machine learning methodologies and industrial applications of the same in the context of adaptable collaborative robots. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blue Origin To Acquire Honeybee Robotics <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Jeff Bezos&#8217; Blue Origin has announced plans to acquire Honeybee Robotics, a company that specializes in the development of space-based robotic systems. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Founded in 1983, Honeybee Robotics has developed automation for several Mars missions (see video below) and is currently collaborating with NASA on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/nasas-dragonfly-will-fly-around-titan-looking-for-origins-signs-of-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dragonfly<\/a> mission to explore Saturn\u2019s moon Titan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Honeybee Robotics - HD Mars 2020 Sample Acquisition and Caching Concept\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NphWPvi9cy4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Blue Origin hasn&#8217;t disclosed its long-term plans for Honeybee, but, as <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/blue-origin-to-acquire-honeybee-robotics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Space News<\/a> reported, both Blue Origin and Bezos &#8220;have long discussed using space resources to enable the expansion of humanity into space,&#8221; so it seems likely that the acquisition will see further expansion and development of Honeybee&#8217;s mineral extraction and testing robots and tools.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Goldfish drives its tank to find food<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The viral star of January&#8217;s robotics news was not a robot, but a goldfish. Like something from Douglas Adams&#8217; <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hitchhiker&#8217;s Guide To The Galaxy<\/a><\/em>, the goldfish can move its &#8216;Fish Operated Vehicle&#8217; &#8211;which is also an aquarium and a robotic platform&#8211; around in order to reach a reward. Developed by researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel, the system was designed to test the navigational capabilities of goldfish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"WATCH: Researchers in Israel train goldfish to &#039;drive&#039; robotic water tanks\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hQUqEHCNyZ0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Over time, the researchers found that the fish came to understand that their actions could impact the movement of the FOV in desired ways, leading them to a tasty reward. Next, the team changed the environment\u2014the fish drove their little FOV around both indoor and outdoor arenas and with changing targets and obstacles.
