A good first step is to learn the different parts of a robot that might be useful for your chosen industrial applications.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>But what are the different parts of a robotic arm?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>All robotic arms are similar. They are usually variations on the same underlying design and <a href=\"https:\/\/robocademy.com\/2020\/04\/21\/robot-kinematics-in-a-nutshell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">kinematic structure.<\/a> Even industrial robots that look very different can be almost identical when you ignore their surface appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a good thing if you are still relatively new to robotics. It means you can understand the core design of a robotic arm by just learning about the basic parts of a robot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s what you need to know about robot parts, and what you don&#8217;t need to know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"just-using-robots-here-s-what-you-don-t-need-to-know\">Just Using Robots? Here&#8217;s What You <em>Don&#8217;t<\/em> Need to Know<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You might think that you need to know a lot of robotics theory and fundamentals before you can use robots in your business. This is just not true. You can get by with very little basic knowledge about robots and how they work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are multiple layers of complexity in robotics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, you could look at robotics from the levels of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Top-level operation and programming:<\/strong> Here you need to know very little about the underlying robotic hardware. You just need to know enough to use the robot.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Mechatronics and kinematic design:<\/strong> Here you would understand the mechanics and electronics of the robotic machine, but not the specifics of each individual component.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Detailed mechanical design:<\/strong> Here you would understand exactly how the wrist joint is built and controlled. But you might only know the basics of high-level robotic programming.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you wanted to, you could spend your whole life learning about all the different aspects of robotic mechanical design. Robots are a genuinely multidisciplinary technology \u2014 a good roboticist knows a little of everything but doesn&#8217;t need to know all the details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you just want to use a robot in your business, you already have the skills and knowledge to do that!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-are-the-basic-parts-to-make-a-robot-arm-\">What Are the Basic Parts to Make a Robot Arm?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As robots are such complex systems, they comprise a lot of different parts. You can categorize these parts in various ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Common parts of a robotic cell include sensors, control systems, external axes, tool changers, networking, and many more. Most of these are external to the robot but help it achieve its chosen task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this article, we&#8217;ll only look at the robot itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can split an industrial robot arm into 2 basic parts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>robotic arm <\/strong>itself: You can think of this as &#8220;the robot.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>end effector<\/strong>: This is the &#8220;business end&#8221; of the robot and is the part that actually performs the task.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s look more deeply at the robot arm itself\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-5-core-parts-of-a-robotic-arm\">The 5 Core Parts of a Robotic Arm<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can think of there being 5 core parts of any industrial robotic arm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These parts are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"1-joints-and-actuators\">1. Joints and Actuators<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The robot&#8217;s joints are the &#8220;bits that move.&#8221; There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.evsint.com\/types-of-robot-joints\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">various types of robot joints<\/a>, including rotational joints, linear joints, orthogonal joints, and revolving joints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Parts-of-Robotic-Arm-Joints.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"577\" src=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Parts-of-Robotic-Arm-Joints-1024x577.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Parts-of-Robotic-Arm-Joints-1024x577.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Parts-of-Robotic-Arm-Joints-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Parts-of-Robotic-Arm-Joints-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Parts-of-Robotic-Arm-Joints-1536x865.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/robodk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Parts-of-Robotic-Arm-Joints.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Actuators are the mechanisms that drive the robot joints. The most common are electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic actuators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2-links\">2. Links<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Between each of the robot&#8217;s joints is at least one physical link. These are often metal tubes, though they can be made of any rigid material \u2014 or sometimes even flexible materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The links provide the robot with stability and strength. Longer links extend the robot&#8217;s reach while shorter links provide more stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-internal-sensors\">3. Internal Sensors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robotic_sensors\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Various internal sensors<\/a> give the robotic system information on the position and orientation of each joint, as well as other properties. The most common example is a rotational encoder or potentiometer positioned at each of the robot&#8217;s joints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other common internal sensors include motor current sensors \u2014 to detect when the robot collides with something \u2014 and force-torque sensors for finer force sensing and control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-power-source\">4. Power Source<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The robot arm&#8217;s power source provides it with the power it needs to run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost all robots need at least some electrical power for the internal sensors and control systems. Beyond this, the major power source will be the one used to run the robot&#8217;s joint actuators \u2014 usually either electrical, pneumatic, or hydraulic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5-digital-i-o-and-controller\">5. Digital I\/O and Controller<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The robot&#8217;s digital inputs and outputs are how it communicates with its controller.
