Cannot Rotate Tool More than 180 degrees on a 5-axis CNC mill

#1
Hello everyone,
I’ve built a custom 5-axis CNC machine, and while it generally works great, I’m encountering an issue with tool pathing. The problem arises when the tool needs to rotate to 180 degrees; at this point, the program fails. My tool can rotate infinitely along the Z-axis, but I'm limited by the software setting “Allow the tool to rotate +/- 180 degrees” in the CAM tab options. I need at least 360 degrees of freedom.
Does anyone know a workaround for this limitation? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Can you provide us with the RoboDK project file with your custom 5-axis CNC?

Hi Albert thank you for the quick response. I am unfortunately not allowed to share the files with you as the design is proprietary. I know that doesn't help my apologies. I have narrowed it down to that +/- 180degree tool rotation setting. If I reduce the number, the error happens sooner in the program in direct correlation to the number I set. No idea if there is a work around for it or if I will have to program one. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks :)

If you can provide us with a sample 5-axis CNC that does not show any proprietary information but allows us to reproduce this issue we can help you better.

Yes of course, let me work on replicating it. I will send it over within the next two days.

I have replicated the robot in a blocky form. It seems if I import the curves from fusion 360 it is able to run fine my problem starts when I go to update the machining settings. I believe it is going through a check to see if the angles are reachable at that point I get an error.

For some context it is a large-scale 3D printer we are looking to make a slicer for with a rotating nozzle.

Some workarounds I did to get it working:
Picked 5 axis cnc machine because I couldn't get an external rotating axis to work with the 3 axis hbot. I only need 4 axis of th 5 axis so I left one of them blank.
Had to change the axis rotation because the Hbot has Z lifts only on the x carriage where is mine is gantry-based z lift.

I appreciate you taking the time to discuss these issues.
