3D Printing on 6 Axis ABB Robot

#1
Is it possible to set up a 6 axis robot (ABB 6640) for 3d printing? The docs state:
Industrial robot arms can be used as a 3-axis or a 5-axis 3D printer with RoboDK

Does that mean one axis (perhaps the 6th) is disabled?

Thanks!

Yes, you can do 3D printing with 6-axis robot arms. RoboDK helps you prepare simulations and programs for 3D printing by managing the redundancy. You can do this with a 3D printing project or a robot machining project. You can find more information here:

Thanks for your reply Albert, can you explain a bit what you mean by "managing the redundancy"?

Unfortunately I can't do any testing as that function is not available to me (trial expired before we had hardware set up). I'm not even sure if this function is available on the trial version so it is difficult to tell if this will suit our purpose. I've been in touch with your sales dept but no luck yet.

Thanks,
Tom

With the robot machining project or the 3D printing settings you can configure and preview your preferred tool orientation. You can find more information here:
